Let’s face it: the weather in Riverside is about as unpredictable as parking in Lot 30 (commuters, am I right?). One day, the sun is beating down upon you as you walk to class; the next, you’re running into the library to stay dry. Sure, it’s easy to look cute on the days when the sun’s out, but what about on those rainy days? Never fear! With just a few pieces of clothing, you can turn your gloomy day into a chic one!
When the temperatures drop, we layer up, simple as that. However, layering can often lead to looking bulky, as we reach for thick peacoats and jackets. Instead, try opting for an anorak! With an anorak, you get the warmth and protection of a coat, all without looking like you’ve got a million layers on. Anoraks are known for having cinched waists and large pockets, adding some functionality to their flattering fit. These jackets were extremely popular in the spring lines of many designers, and low-cost alternatives are hitting the shelves of stores such as Target, Forever 21, and H&M.
Something I find challenging when selecting an outfit for a rainy day is footwear. Sandals are a definite no, as are any shoes that seem to absorb water like a sponge (cough, Toms, cough). I’ve ruined many a pair of leather boots, and I find that most rainboots are just too clunky for my taste. A few months ago, however, I bought a pair of faux leather combat boots at H&M and decided to put them to the test. They exceeded my expectations, and are now my go to rainy day shoes! Pair them with some cozy leggings tucked into some knit socks, and your feet will stay warm and dry!
Accessorizing on a rainy day always seems like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be, especially when they are practical and functional. First off, pairing an interesting print scarf can spice up even the dullest outfit. You can make it the focal point of the outfit, or just go for a simple knit one. Either way, you’ll be keeping warm while looking put-together. A beanie is always a great accessory to have in rainy and windy weather, as it’s an easy remedy to unruly hair. Adding a cute pair of dangly earrings to peek out gives a polished look without much effort. As you walk to class, you want all your belongings to stay as relatively dry as possible. I usually carry a purse with all my school stuff in it, but I’ve found that the rain always finds a way to get in there. This season, I’m switching it up with a rucksack style bag, which will ensure that my belongings are fully covered, all while looking stylish. And of course, complete your look with a good umbrella. Sometimes shelling out a few extra bucks for a nice one goes a long way. Trust me, no one wants to look like a cartoon character with an inside-out umbrella when the wind picks up!
Hope these tips brighten up your gloomy days!

for real though sometimes it looks like its gonna be 100 degrees and then it starts pouring.
