Trend Report: Peplum

As I’m browsing through several fashion stores at the mall, I begin to notice a recurring flouncy blouse style on the racks. I also flip through the latest Elle and Vogue magazines reviewing their spring 2012 fashion week recaps highlighting many of the new trends on the runway and observe how stylists have translated over-the-top runway styles into something wearable. So what’s all this peplum hype about? Maybe you’ve heard of this term before or maybe you haven’t but this is yet another perfect example of history repeating itself! Here’s the low down:

Definition: A flared ruffle attached to the waist of a jacket, blouse, bodice, skirt etc.

History: A term originating back to the 19t h century, peplum was found primarily attached as an extra overskirt and sewn on to and dropped from the waist. Origins of the idea were noticeable in the Puritan/Cavalier era tops and would hide the top of the skirt underneath the shirt. The modernized version of peplum was popularized in the 1940’s (thanks to designers like Christian Dior and Jacques Fath) and faded ten years later but returned in the 1980’s and 90’s with its striking silhouette style that we are familiar with today.

What’s so great about them: Regardless of your body size, peplum can either help hide or accentuate your hips! So all you birthing hip-blessed women, no need to worry about all of the attention going to your hips! Because the tops of peplum-flared skirts protrude out from the waist, everything stays hidden. And if you don’t have too much meat on your bones (especially those with a boyish figure), these little guys give the illusion that you have a waist. Of course, it is important to correctly fit yourself when wearing this trend. Fitted peplums are better for larger figures as they bring attention to the waist and are less on the hips in addition to creating an hourglass figure. On the contrary, flared peplums will make your hips look larger and are appropriate for straight figures. With correct interpretation, a peplum shirt or skirt on top of anything fitted will embrace the natural female waistline. WARNING: If styled incorrectly, you will look dated!

Adderall

With finals and projects crammed into a week’s time, students just can’t seem to avoid the prolonged lines at the local coffee shop. Caffeine is a hell of a drug that can certainly get you through those all-nighters, which as you might already know, could have been avoided if not for those long nights out at the local bar. It’s a quick fix for procrastinated study time. But who’s to blame – this is college, right? Well, it turns out that caffeine isn’t the only substance students abuse in order to avoid going astray with their studies. I’m talking about a little pill you can swallow that can give you an “I can study ten weeks’ worth of notes within the first hour of Schindler’s List while still feeling jolly all around” kind of feeling. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen – I’m talking about Adderall, and it doesn’t necessarily come with that description.

Adderall, as you may already know, is also known as the academic steroid, which consists of ingredients such as dextroamphetamine, amphetamine, and other amphetamine salts that I still have trouble pronouncing, much less understanding their chemical nomenclature. However, what I can tell you is that Adderrall is a brand-name amphetamine most commonly prescribed to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, in patients who struggle with simple, focus-requiring tasks – such as studying. All in all, Adderall is an effective medication when prescribed to those who need it. So what does this mean for the rest of the world who, fortunately, do not suffer from ADHD?

Atrocities Occurring in Syria Must Not Go Unnoticed

Last Thursday commemorated the one-year mark since the initial uprising of the Syrian people against Bashar Al-Assad’s government. On March 15th, 2011, also called “the Day of Dignity,” the Syrian people gathered in the streets to protest against the indecent actions of government officials against young children, who were imitating images of other revolutions shown on television, as well as other political prisoners being held for dissidence. Open, political dialogue was not tolerated, and discourse was silenced, as turmoil within Syria increased.

In response to the protests, the government, along with arresting people, opted to open fire on the peaceful civilians. This inspired and provoked more demonstrators, creating increasingly heated, mass protests and fighting, especially in the towns of Daraa, Homs, Hama, and Damascus.
