Global Warming with Dr. Crowley

Transcript:

JC: Good evening, and welcome to a Thirsty Scholars exclusive; I’m Jacqueline Curtis. Today, we’re here with Dr. Crowley to discuss global warming. How are you today?

Dr. C: Fine, Jacqueline; it’s good to be here.

JC: So I want to ask you: what is global warming?

Dr. C: Well, global warming is another term for a bigger concept, which is dealing with global climate change. It refers to the increase in the temperature of the earth that is caused by the greenhouse gases that are building up, primarily carbon dioxide, but also methane and some other things we release from agriculture, like nitrous oxide. But all together, these gasses go into the atmosphere, and they increase [Read more...]

I am a Bird

I am a bird who wishes she could fly.

I am a bird who only wishes to decide.

I am a bird who dreams of the abyss.

I am a bird who would like to be free –

free to do whatever she pleases.

I can feel the breeze blowing through my hair.

I can hear the wind beneath my flapping wings.

I can smell the scent of beautiful flowers and trees.

I know that one day this will be me.

I am a bird who cannot fly.

I am a bird who is caged inside.

I am a bird who dreams of the world she wishes to see.

I am a bird with clipped wings.

But I know that, someday,
I will be that bird who is set free.

Some people don’t change

Some people don’t change.
Or is it that we wish something better for them?
Better for everyone.
But they are whom they are;
so is it that
people don’t change,
or people can’t accept them? –
accept them for whom they are,
like we’re supposed to?
I guess that’s the big idea, but
how do you accept those who don’t accept themselves?
Some people never change;
those people just don’t fit in your life.
They can’t be the person you want them to be.
So there you stay,
destined to hope for something better,
but letting go of everything that matters.

Follow Your Path

Two strangers in a circle of life,
together tangled in a binding of faith.
They walk alone, trying to find each other,
not knowing who the other may be.

Always, have they been thinking –
thinking of that special person that they want in their life.
But they have not yet found each other,
because they are still walking along the path.

The path takes them here, and not there –
far, but not near.
They keep walking, and walking,
and from the path they never stray.

They know that it will lead them somewhere –
somewhere in which they belong.
They feel the strength of the faith that pulls them together –
a feeling that seems like forever.

Finally reaching the ending point of the path,
they see each other, and don’t say a word.
Their feelings begin to skyrocket;
they run to each other and just stare each other up and down.

They begin to tell each other their life stories,
about how they have been waiting for that person.
Together, forever, is what they said,
and together, forever, they were, until their death.

Day 1 – Chocolate Chip Cookies

This recipe was borrowed from my friend Cat Priamos, an amazing chef and baker; you will definitely see that name come around more than once. I asked her what the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe was, because, let me tell you, the one that I had used before was an absolute disaster, and I vowed never to use it again. I created nearly 75 [Read more...]

ReFund UCR Millionaire’s Tax March Madness Launch

Years of budget cuts, fee hikes and lay-offs continue to erode not only the quality and accessibility of public higher education in this state, but also threaten the ability of workers and students to survive economically.

Have you had enough of the UC Regents and other administrators blaming politicians in Sacramento for budget issues that they lack the political will to address? Are you ready to go on the offensive for permanent, progressive tax-revenue solutions for our state’s funding problems that won’t continue to make workers and students pay for a crisis they didn’t create?
